Open Mic Report, 04-17-07

Over three months have passed since my last Open Mic Report -- that of January 4th -- so here comes another one...

Sunday, January 21st, 2007:     Godfrey Daniels,   Bethlehem, PA         On Sunday January 21st I played two songs at the Godfrey Daniels Open Mic:   Ferdinando Carulli's "Allegretto,"   and Pink Floyd's "The Thin Ice."     The set seemed to go over well, with someone letting out a complimentary-sounding "oooohhh" as I finished up "The Thin Ice."     GD was quite packed that night with performers, hence the reduction in the set length from the usual three songs per performer to just two songs per performer.     Having been there since before the 7:00 PM start, I slipped out around 10:30 PM for the long ride home, with several performers yet to take the stage.     I don't like leaving an open mic before everyone has played, but I make an exception at GD given the distance of the venue from my home.

Friday, February 2nd, 2007:     Hammonton Bagel Cafe,   Hammonton, NJ         On Friday February 2nd I played two songs at the Hammonton Bagel Cafe Open Mic:   Pink Floyd's "The Thin Ice,"   and my own "Her Song."     "The Thin Ice" seemed to go over extremely well, with my performance commanding the audience's attention quite thoroughly.     Almost as soon as I began the follow-up number, however, I seemed to lose the attention of much of the audience, strangely perhaps.     I'm not sure whether my follow-up performance was off, or whether the audience had expected or wanted something different from me for it, or whether yet something else was going on.     In general however I have to say that the overall experience was very positive, with the audience at HBC, in general throughout the night, being one of the most respectful and supportive audiences I have seen at an open mic.
